Gov. Kay Ivey has signed a bill protecting historical monuments in Alabama. Under the legislation sponsored by Sen. Gerald Allen (R-Cottondale), local governments are barred from moving monuments on public property that have been in place for at least 40 years. The new law also prohibits the renaming of buildings and streets with historical names. The law comes at a time Confederate monuments are under attack. New Orleans has removed four statues and monuments, including one of Gen. Robert E. Lee, which stood at the city's Lee Circle. Allen commended Ivey for signing the bill, saying it's about preserving all history.
