Suspect Arrested For Birmingham Police Officer Murder

A convicted felon has been charged in the murder of Birmingham police Sgt. Wytasha Carter. 31-year-old Jeremy Elwin Owens facing capital murder charges for killing Carter and attempted murder charges for shooting at Sgt. Talana Brown. Owens was injured in the shootout and was arrested this morning as soon as he was released from rehab.

Owens lives in Center Point and was arrested in 2011 after robbing a man and shooting at him. He pleaded guilty to the robbery and the attempted murder charge was dropped. Owens was sentenced to 20 years with only 3 to serve. He was released in 2015.

Sgt. Wytasha Carter was investigating a rash of car break-ins when he and his partner were ambushed.
